ECEO 327 - Foundations of Literacy, Early Childhood

The purpose of this course is to explore the literacy development of children in a culturally diverse society. Students will explore foundational theory, the language acquisition of children from birth through grade three, and developmentally appropriate instructional practices within the five components of a quality literacy program (vocabulary, phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension, and phonics) including writing and grammar. Emphasis is given to the characteristics of a research-based, literature-rich program that integrates language with beginning reading and writing concepts. Students will investigate the role of the teacher in the development of language processes. Students will learn literacy content knowledge that will starts the foundation of literacy education that the subsequent literacy methods courses will use for instruction. Prerequisites: Admitted to College of Education and ECEO 321 - Children’s Literature. Grade only. Offered fall semester. Course may be retaken once due to student withdrawal or earning less than a C grade.
