Art (Teaching) (ARTT) - BT Major

Purpose


The teaching program prepares graduates for Minnesota certification in art (K-12) and is offered in conjunction with the College of Education. Teaching majors must take all courses in the Art (K-12) Professional Education Sequence in addition to courses in the content area.

Requirements Overview (Art Teaching)


  • General Education Requirements: 40 S.H.
  • Art Specialty Core Requirements and Art Electives: 51 S.H. including 6 S.H. General Education.
  • Professional Education Sequence: 38 S.H. including 3 S.H. in General Education and 3 S.H. Physical Development  and Wellness.

Teacher Education Licensure Program Information


Students must be admitted to the Teacher Education Unit before taking Professional Education courses. This process is competitive; the number of students admitted each semester is limited. Admission is based on grades (2.75 GPA), passing Basic Skills Exams and other measures. All Winona State University Teacher Education Licensure Programs  are continuously updated to reflect new licensure requirements from the Minnesota Board of Teaching. Please contact your program advisor for the latest information about program requirements whether you are (1) applying to a teacher education program, or (2) currently enrolled in a teacher education program.

Required General Education Courses (40 S.H.)


This requirement includes 3 S.H. Professional Education Sequence courses that also satisfies General Education GOAL 5 (SPED 300) and another one that satisfies the Physical Development and Wellness requirement (HERS 204). It also includes 6 S.H. of Art Requirements that also satisfy General Education GOAL 6 (ART 221 & 222).

Both courses require B grade or better.

Goal 2: Critical Thinking


Fulfilled when all other goal areas fulfilled.

Goal 3: Natural Science (7 S.H.)


Requires at least one course with lab and suggests courses from two different subject areas.

Goal 4: Math/Logical Reasoning (3-4 S.H.)


Goal 5: History & Social Behavioral Sciences (9 S.H.)


 Requires courses from at least two different subject areas.

Goal 6: Humanities & Fine Arts (9 S.H.)


 Requires courses from at least two different subject areas.

Goal 8: Global Perspectives (3 S.H.)


Goal 9: Ethical and Civic Responsibility (3 S.H.)

Note: Teacher education majors must complete all Professional Education Sequence courses in addition to content area courses. Refer to Teacher Education Licensure Programs  for more information.

  • EDFD 401 and 461 must be taken concurrently
  • EDFD 421 and 441 must be taken concurrently
