Return to Degrees & Programs Return to: Degrees & Programs

21 S.H.

2.0 GPA required.

The Bilingual/Bicultural Education minor program prepares future bilingual teachers to effectively teach academic content in two languages and allows teachers to gain the Bilingual/Bicultural Education endorsement on a Minnesota teaching license (elementary education or a grade 5 through 12 or grade 7 through 12 license in mathematics, a science field, social studies, or health education). Successful completion of the program requires an advanced level proficiency in English and another language, and demonstration of subject matter knowledge including: the fundamentals of the first and second language acquisition; the history of bilingual education and the cultures represented in the United States and other countries; appropriate assessment techniques for linguistically diverse students; and content-based language instruction.

Students who wish to obtain a Bilingual Education Endorsement in a language other than Spanish may be able to do so if they have successfully completed equivalent courses in other world languages. Interested students of languages other than Spanish should meet with a Spanish Bilingual Education faculty member to determine appropriate course substitutions and program eligibility.
