Campus Overview

Since 1917, Winona State University has served students in Rochester, Minnesota, and the surrounding area. The Greater Rochester area has a population of more than 110,000 people; area residents have a high level of educational attainment, and many residents take advantage of the lifelong learning opportunities offered by WSU-Rochester.

The growing city of Rochester provides WSU-Rochester with unique opportunities to offer specialized undergraduate and graduate programs aimed at key industries in the area, including accounting, business administration, child advocacy studies (CAST), computer science, education, human resource management, nursing, and social work. WSU-Rochester’s strong “commitment to community” is evident as students, faculty, and staff from a variety of programs engage in experiential community-based learning in area organizations, businesses, and schools.

WSU-Rochester has served the region with distinction, and the numbers tell the story. Approximately 300 students per year graduate from WSU-Rochester. More than 1,500 students attend WSU-Rochester each year through day, evening, weekend and online/hybrid classes, and more than 7,000 WSU alumni currently live and work in a variety of professional careers in the Rochester area. Approximately 46 resident faculty are located on the Rochester campus.

WSU-Rochester is deeply immersed in the communities that we serve, with classes being offered online, on/off-campus and at multiple community sites. We have an extensive history of collaborating and offering services and programs that complement those offered at Rochester Community and Technical College. We also host classes at Riverside Elementary in the Rochester Public School District, Sumner Elementary in the Austin Public School District, and at the Byron Public School District. To launch our centennial celebration (2017) of serving Rochester and the Rochester region, WSU-Rochester has opened a new location at 400 S. Broadway, Suite 300. This modern facility reflects the energy and vibe of Rochester and offers community relevant programming including community and business outreach events and graduate education programs.

Degrees and Programs

WSU-Rochester provides upper-division courses for the completion of a number of WSU baccalaureate degrees. Entering students can transfer credits to WSU from other institutions through individual transcript evaluation or official program articulation agreements with Rochester Community and Technical College, other two-year MN State institutions, and accredited institutions of higher education. Through these program agreements, students can complete a number of baccalaureate degree programs by completing upper-level courses at WSU-Rochester. See the Undergraduate Degrees & Programs section for detailed descriptions of the undergraduate programs.

Students at WSU-Rochester can also complete several graduate degrees at the Master’s, Specialist, and Doctoral levels. For more information about the graduate programs, see the WSU Graduate Catalog.

Admission

Students seeking a degree must apply for admission to the University. Students should be aware that most undergraduate degree programs (accounting, business administration, education, human resource management, nursing, and social work) also require an additional application process. For general information about undergraduate admissions, see the Admissions  section.

Students who are not formally admitted to a WSU degree, licensure, or certificate program who want to enroll in undergraduate coursework must complete a Guest Student Registration Agreement. Guest student status is valid for one semester at a time. Students must re-apply each semester. Financial aid is not available for guest students. If you are a currently enrolled student at another MN State college/university, you may be able to register at WSU as a Visiting Student using your eServices account. Financial aid is not available for visiting students at the visit school.

Students can transfer credits from Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) to WSU through individual transcript evaluation and/or through official articulated agreements with RCTC. Through these special agreements, students may complete a number of courses and baccalaureate degree programs by transferring their lower-division credits from RCTC to apply toward course requirements for baccalaureate programs offered by Winona State University. Credits earned from other institutions will be evaluated for transfer.

Students interested in transferring to WSU-Rochester or to WSU-Winona should schedule an appointment with a faculty program advisor or a general campus advisor for detailed program guidance.
