△ POLS 475 - Challenges of Democracy

(3 credits)

The emphasis in this course is on the perceived threats to democracy as a system of government throughout the world. It will examine the argument that the distinction between established and transitional democracies cannot be maintained because all democracies now face similar challenges from populism and identity politics. The students will study the theory of democracy and also consider how, and whether, its promise can be realized. Prerequisite: POLS 135 - Introduction to Comparative Politics  or instructor permission. Grade or P/NC. Offered alternate years.
