MGMT 497 - Strategic Human Resource Management


(3 credits)

The purpose of this course is to explore the role of human resources (HR) management in strategic planning and management of human capital in an organization from a global business perspective. The course will emphasize the strategic alignment between human resources functions and business organizations’ need to meet its organizational goals. Therefore, the course aims to equip HR students with the analytical thinking necessary to formulate and implement human resources policies that aim to integrate and align the people practices, reward and incentive policies, and role structures with overall business model and business strategy of the company. Hence, the course will examine the issues and challenges that need to be confronted when trying to attain horizontal and vertical fit between the elements of people practices, rewards and role structures to support the business model and business strategy of the company. To accomplish the stated goals, students will be exposed to a number of course assignments from a strategic human resources framework and complete an applied project. Prerequisites: Admission to College of Business, senior standing, △ MGMT 317 - Management of Human Resources , △ MGMT 325 - Organizational Dynamics , MGMT 417 - Compensation and Benefits , MGMT 437 - Labor Relations and Collective Bargaining , and MGMT 467 - Staffing and Evaluation . Grade only. Offered annually.
