BIOL 344 - Yamuna River Study in India: From the Himalayas to the Taj Majal

(3 credits)

The Yamuna River Study in India is a faculty-led travel study course that offers students interested in ecology, microbiology and/or public health the opportunity to travel to India to sample and study the holy Yamuna River. Students will experience travel through the foothills of Indian Himalayas to the source of the Yamuna, a holy site to which hundreds of thousands of pilgrims travel every year. Students will take a short but vigorous hike close to the source of the Yamuna river in the mountains. By traveling downstream, following the Yamuna river, students will witness historically important ruins in New Delhi and other sites in Agra, including the majestic Taj Mahal. Students will be immersed in a vastly different world that is composed of diverse Indian cultures and religions (Hindu and Sikh). Further, students will sample and analyze different parameters along the river in order to understand the inter dependence of the health and ecology of a river and its peoples. Meets GOAL 10 (beginning Summer ‘22). Grade or P/NC. Offered alternate years (usually May term).
