CAS 620 - Understanding Child & Adolescent Behavioral and Mental Health Concerns (3 credits)
This course will cover common mental health and behavioral concerns often found in children. We will discuss cultural aspects of behavior and feelings expressions, as well as explore personal bias when observing child behavior. While students will learn about some of these disorders and diagnoses as well as some common treatments for these disorders, our focus will remain on appropriate response, advocacy, and seeking out appropriate intervention. Some of the topics we will cover include:Neurodevelopment, Autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, Tourette’s, Common Mental Illness, Anxiety Disorders, Learning Disabilities that can impact behavior, and Emotional Dysregulation. Grade only. Offered annually (usually fall semester).
