◎ CMST 475 - Argumentation and Advocacy


(3 credits) Meets GEP Oral Intensive.

This course is an overview of argumentative strategies employed in the process of justifying conclusions and making decisions. Areas of study include the formation of claims, tests of evidence, and patterns of reasoning relevant to appeals of fact, value, and policy topics. Participants in the class use research, discussion, and practice sessions in argumentative speaking and writing to develop their critical thinking skills. Prerequisite: CMST 191 - Introduction to Public Speaking  or CMST 192 - Introduction to Effective Communication  or CMST 266 - Professional Communication Skills  or CMST 275 - Communication and Civic Dialogue . Grade or P/NC. Offered fall semester.
