CMST 389 - Creating Change Through Persuasion


(3 credits)

This course is designed to study persuasive communication from a variety of perspectives, including rhetorical and/or behavioral science traditions. Areas of emphasis include the formation of attitudes, source credibility, and factors of message design including visual persuasion, persuasive storytelling, propaganda, social movement campaigns, analysis of advertising, message effect, and communication ethics. Students will participate in theory application through analysis essays, presentations, and group work. Prerequisite: CMST 191 - Introduction to Public Speaking  or CMST 192 - Introduction to Effective Communication  or CMST 266 - Professional Communication Skills  or CMST 275 - Communication and Civic Dialogue . Grade or P/NC. Offered annually (usually fall semester).
