ETHN 230 - Introduction to Latinx Studies

(3 credits) Meets GOAL 6 (Humanities) and GOAL 7.

This course is an introductory exploration of the forces that have shaped the Latinx experience in the United States today. The primary focus of this course will be on the inherent racial/ethnic diversity of Latinx communities in the United States today and reasons for migration and immigration that have resulted in the geographic dispersion of these communities throughout the nation. The class will also introduce students to how colonization and systemic forms of racism have marginalized Latinx communities and how those same communities have used social, political, and cultural movements to reaffirm their social, political, and cultural integrity. Grade only. Offered alternate years (usually fall semester).
