EDFD 331 - Teaching Social Studies in Secondary Schools


(3 credits)

This course introduces students to the philosophical and curricular foundations of social studies education, with a focus on preparing informed, engaged citizens. Emphasis is placed on disciplinary literacy-supporting students in reading, writing, and critical thinking within social studies contexts. Students will engage in curriculum planning and instructional design, learning to develop inclusive, inquiry-based learning experiences that reflect best practices in social studies teaching. A required field experience provides opportunities for observation and guided reflection on instructional practices in real classroom settings. Prerequisites: Admission to the Teacher Education program. Grade only. Offered annually (usually fall semester). This course may be retaken once due to student withdrawal or earning less than C grade.
