◎ CS 313 - Networking and Security


(4 credits) Meets GEP Oral Intensive.

This course provides an in-depth study of computer networking and network security principles. Topics include data communications, computer network interfaces, transmission media, and techniques for error detection and correction. Wide area, metropolitan, and local area networks are examined within the framework of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)/OSI reference model, with emphasis on the functions and interactions of all OSI layers. The course also introduces fundamental concepts of network security, including threats, vulnerabilities, and basic protection mechanisms, as well as the social and ethical implications of networking technologies. Prerequisites: CS 250 - Algorithms and Problem-Solving II , one 300-level CS course, and CMST 191 - Introduction to Public Speaking . Grade or P/NC. Offered at least once annually on Winona and Rochester campuses.
