SPAN 306 - The Spanish Eye: The Contribution of Hispanic Masters to World Art

This course serves as an introduction to the Spanish and Latin American canonical masters in the fine arts from the 17th - 21st centuries, with a particular focus on those artists from the last 150 years. The purpose of this course is two-fold: 1) Through discussion of the artists’ work and its relevance in the construction of Hispanic identity, students will expand their knowledge of Hispanic and Latin American cultures and the aesthetic values that underpin them. 2) Through study in the disciplines of painting, architecture, literature, and music students will engage in critical analysis, form aesthetic judgments, and learn how individual creativity can reflect both Hispanic Spanish and Latin American cultures and the human condition as a whole. This course presents these artists as contributors to the tendencies in world fine arts through a particular cultural point of view, one deeply rooted in the values of Hispanic Spanish and Latin American cultures. Prerequisite: SPAN 202 - Intermediate Spanish II or △ SPAN 301 - Spanish Composition and Conversation or SPAN 310 - Spanish for Native/Heritage Speakers or equivalent. Grade or P/NC. Offered summer session.
