BIOL 474 - Clinical Sonography II

This course provides students with a detailed description of the physics and technology of diagnostic pulse-echo B-mode ultrasound, a brief overview of hemodynamics, a detailed description of spectral Doppler and color Doppler imaging and optimization, quality assurance, ultrasound bioeffects and the role of sonographers in the workplace. At the end of the course, the student will be prepared, and required, to sit for the ARDMS Sonography Principles and Instrumentation examination. Students will explore the many aspects of professionalism including: professional interactions, professional responsibilities, sonographer scope of practice, clinical practice standards, ARDMS credentialing requirements, legal and medical ethical issues, sonography and employment related expenses, interviewing and resume skills, and current sonographer issues. Students will read about and respond to issues related to healthcare in other countries (using medical care to motivate environmental conservation), cultural barriers that affect healthcare, the high cost and safety issues associated with healthcare in the United States, and quality of life issues. Students will prepare for ARDMS examinations via a series of specialty reviews and mock registry examinations. Information on credentialing examinations, effective test-taking strategies, and ARDMS examination content are also provided. A 19 - week clinical rotation in the following ultrasound areas: General/Gyn, Vascular, and Obstetrics will have students learning through observation, scanning, and application of knowledge obtained during didactic coursework and scanning labs. Prerequisite: BIOL 473 - Clinical Sonography I. Grade only. Offered spring semester.
