Mission of the Department of Leadership Education

We prepare collaborative leaders who sustain and renew America’s democracy by transforming and managing schools and organizations for the benefit of each learner and with a view to the common good.

Department Overview

The Department of Leadership Education offers two degrees (the Master’s of Science, MS, and the Educational Specialist, EdS) and licensure in two areas: the K-12 Principalship and the Superintendency. Within the MS we have five emphases students can choose from. Within the EdS we have two emphases that match up with licensure: K-12 Principalship and General School Leadership - the Superintendency. Licensure requires 30 credits beyond the MS with specific course requirements related to the Minnesota Board of School Administrator competencies. The EdS degree requires the student to meet the course requirements of licensure and produce a field study (a research product) with the six credits related to it. Admission to the Department of Leadership Education

Applicants wishing to be accepted as graduate students in the Department of Leadership Education must first make application through the Office of Graduate Studies. The Leadership Education Department is responsible for making the final decision on admittance to the degree program. The department may require a personal interview and/or a qualifying examination. Download an application. Prospective graduate students must meet the following requirements to be considered for admission to graduate study in Leadership Education.

For the Master’s degree: A GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale for all Bachelor’s degree work. Applicants who do not meet the GPA requirement may attain probationary status if the GPA is at least 2.60. Probationary status is considered on a case-by-case basis. The Organizational Leadership emphasis requires students to be employed and have at least one year of professional work experience.
For Specialist degree: A GPA of 3.25 on a 4 point scale for all Master’s degree work. If the GPA is less than 3.25, a personal interview and/or qualifying exam may be required at the Department’s discretion. Although the Master’s degree is recommended, some individuals may wish to enter the Specialist degree program with only a Bachelor’s degree. For such individuals, an undergraduate GPA of 3.25 is required; if less than 3.25 a personal interview and/or qualifying exam may be required at the Department’s discretion.
Written Statement: First-time applicants to either the MS or the EdS degree must submit a 2-5 page typewritten statement explaining their:
- vision and purpose of K-12 education in our society (or substitute a public or non-profit organization you have/or want to work for, for K-12 education)
- personal interest, aptitude and experience in leadership

ITV / Web-Based Course Offerings

The Department of Leadership Education is committed to diversity in pedagogy and course delivery methods. The Organizational Leadership emphases courses are on-line and some department elective courses are delivered online with no face-to-face class meetings. Most courses are web assisted or supported in the form of online syllabi, supplemental reading links, assignments, and discussion forums. Check with the course instructor for details. All courses are offered at two sites through ITV (Winona and Rochester campuses). Additional remote ITV access sites are possible and must be approved by the instructor at least two weeks before the first class session.
