Education Studies Overview

The mission of the Education Studies Department is to empower our educational community by providing a foundational curriculum that supports our democratic society. Our vision is to develop strong educational professionals and a strong democratic society. To achieve our mission, we offer courses in business education, educational foundations, and student teaching.

Business Education (5-12 teaching licensure) prepares students to become middle and/or high school business teachers. Courses integrate technology, business, and teaching methodology to prepare students for future success teaching in a Business classroom. View the Business Education  page to learn more about this exciting career.

Education Foundations (EDFD) offers undergraduate courses in the psychological, social, and philosophical foundations of education. These courses make up the professional education sequence and meet the Minnesota Standards of Effective Practice (SEPs) identified in Minnesota State Statue for teacher licensure. Coursework provides experiences that help education majors from all education licensure programs understand (1) the role and purpose of public education in a democratic society; (2) contemporary theories of human learning and development and their implications for teaching and learning; (3) curriculum, instruction, and assessment strategies that ensure student success; and (4) issues and requirements related to standards, assessments, and accountability.

In addition, EDFD offers undergraduate courses in the effective use of technology in classroom instruction. These courses explore the impact of technology on human learning and behavior, particularly its ability to expand students’ access to information, reduce the cognitive requirements of classroom tasks, and enable students to demonstrate understanding using various media. (Go to course descriptions and filter for courses with the prefix EDFD, EDST, and BUED.)
