Mission

The College provides quality graduate and undergraduate programs in Nursing and Health Sciences, Recreation, Tourism, and Social Work. The College’s educational environment supports life-long wellness in the individual, the University, the community, and global society committed to social justice. These programs are designed to graduate caring, ethical, competent, and progressive professionals who are sensitive to diversity and prepared to work with individuals through all stages of health and wellness.

Accreditation

All Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing programs are fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), 1 Dupont Circle NW, Suite 530, Washington, DC 20036-1120. CCNE exclusively accredits baccalaureate and higher degree programs in nursing. The undergraduate nursing major is approved by the Minnesota Board of Nursing.

The Athletic Training major holds full accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). All health education programs have continuing accreditation by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and approval by the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB).

The Social Work program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Scholarship and Community Service

The College supports faculty and student scholarship/research within the University and with educational partners in the region. Faculty hold joint appointments or consultant roles with health care, sports, human services and recreation agencies throughout the southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin area. Faculty collaborate with major clinical education partners on local, regional and national funded projects.

Community service is demonstrated in many ways within and outside the University. Faculty hold practice appointments in the Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center (Winona, MN) and the Migrant Health and Community Clinic (Rochester, MN); manage the campus cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program; direct research in the campus human performance laboratory; and collaborate with major affiliates on local, regional, and national service-learning projects.

Faculty

A majority of the faculty hold doctoral degrees earned at prominent universities throughout the United States. In addition, the learning environment in the classroom and practica/internship/clinical sites are supported by other professional experts in the region who hold graduate degrees in health sciences, nursing, recreation, tourism, and social work.. All faculty hold appropriate/required licensure and/or certifications in their respective discipline, maintain their practice/clinical excellence, and are recognized for their expertise among their faculty/practice colleagues.

Facilities

The Department of Social Work is housed in Minné Hall and offers the Bachelor of Social Work program on both the Winona and Rochester campuses. The Majors offered by the Department of Recreation, Tourism, and Therapeutic Recreation are located in Memorial Hall. The Department of Health, Exercise and Rehabilitative Sciences is located on the Winona campus in Memorial Hall. The Department of Nursing provides two locations for undergraduate and graduate nursing: Stark Hall on the Winona campus and WSU-Rochester in Rochester, MN. The Baccalaureate Nursing program is offered at both sites and the Baccalaureate RN Completion program is delivered from the Rochester campus and La Crescent site. The graduate programs in Nursing are located at WSU-Rochester.
