Purpose

The Conflict Studies minor is an interdisciplinary program administered by the Philosophy Department; the program includes courses offered by various departments and faculty, including Global Studies, History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology.

As outbreaks of violence around the world continually remind us, armed conflict and the elusiveness of peace are among the deepest problems facing humankind. The Conflict Studies program at Winona State University is an interdisciplinary minor drawing on expertise from many fields, and provides students with an opportunity to study conflict and its prevention and resolution from historical, scientific, legal, and ethical perspectives.

The Conflict Studies minor is flexible, with a small number of required courses and a varied list of electives, so students can tailor their program to meet their own needs and interests. Since violence and armed conflict can arise in many different contexts, a background in understanding their nature, causes, and justifications can benefit students pursuing a wide range of personal and professional goals. Students preparing for careers in media and journalism, government and politics, international organizations, military and veterans’ affairs and veterans’ counseling, and law enforcement will find Conflict Studies uniquely valuable.
