Purpose

Military Science classes are sponsored by the US Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), and taught by active duty, Army Reserve, or National Guard personnel. These courses develop skills to lead as an officer.

If you want to gain skills in leadership, management, problem solving, and decision-making to serve you as an Army officer or a leader in the workplace, Army ROTC may be right for you. The ROTC program offers students an opportunity to earn an officer’s commission and help pay for college.

College graduates of the Army ROTC program are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard and serve in leadership positions within their organization. As a graduate of Army ROTC and a commissioned officer, students will have the leadership and management skills necessary for success in both military and civilian endeavors.

Students do not incur any military obligation during the first two years of ROTC (except scholarship students). Once a student accepts a scholarship or begins the advanced courses during their junior year of ROTC, they make a commitment to serve as an officer in either the Active Army, or reserve components upon graduation. The initial active duty obligation is either three or four years.
