Note: All Winona State University teacher education programs are continuously updated to reflect new licensure requirements from the Minnesota Board of Teaching. Please contact your program advisor and refer to the Teacher Education Addendum for the latest information about program requirements whether you are (1) applying to a teacher education program, or (2) currently enrolled in a teacher education program.
Additionally, the Minnesota Board of Teaching requires that all Spanish Teaching candidates achieve an oral proficiency level of Intermediate High on the ACTFL proficiency scale. In order to achieve this level, most students need to study in a Spanish-speaking country for a minimum of one semester. Any Spanish Teaching student who has not achieved the Intermediate High level will not be allowed to student teach and will not be certified to teach by the state of Minnesota.

Students can take one elective class (up to 4 S.H.) in English. Note:
* In a Spanish-speaking region and pending advisor’s approval. Up to 9 S.H. may be awarded for completion of course requirements in Spanish. Course work completed in English will not count towards the Spanish Teaching major.
** If not applied as a core course Professional Educational Sequence (36 S.H.)
Note: Teacher education majors must take all courses in the Professional Education Sequence in addition to courses in the content area. Refer to the “Teacher Education Licensure Programs ” section of this catalog for more information. Note:
- EFRT 401 and 461 must be taken concurrently
- EFRT 421 and 441 must be taken concurrently
- EFRT 459 and 462 must be taken concurrently
Student Teaching
- Students are also required to take 12 S.H. of Student Teaching. This course varies by department and program. See advisor for more information.
Language Proficiency Interview
All Spanish Teaching students must complete an official Oral Proficiency Interview through Language Testing International prior to student teaching. Students who do not obtain Intermediate High or higher will not be allowed to student teach. See program advisor for details. Please Note:
Students interested in the Spanish Teaching major must select the PSPN code for declaration purposes. This will be converted into SPNT (Spanish Teaching) major after they have been admitted into the program. Note:
