HERS - Health Promotion: School Health (Teaching) (HPST) - BT Major

Upon completion of Health Promotion: School Health, students have the skills and experience necessary to obtain a Minnesota teaching licensure. Students are required to meet the prescribed scores on the Minnesota required basic skills, content, and pedagogy tests. Students who complete this degree and pass the MTLE tests are qualified to apply for licensure and teach in the Minnesota public school systems grades 5-12.

The HERS Department encourages its health promotion majors to become members of its academic club, Health Organization for Promotion and Education (HOPE).

Students majoring in Health Promotion: School Health must complete all requirements of the HERS Department, the Education Department, and all the requirements for graduation specified in the academic policies section in the academic policies section of this catalog. Teaching majors must successfully complete all the courses in the Professional Education Sequence in addition to the school health content area. For admission into the Professional Education Sequence, students majoring in health promotion-school health must refer to Teacher Education Licensure Programs section of this catalog.

Teacher Education Licensure Program Information


Before a student is able to take Education courses needed for licensure, that student must first be admitted to the Teacher Education Unit. This process is competitive as the number of students who can be admitted each semester is limited. Admission is based on grades, passing the Basic Skills Exams and other measures. All Winona State University Teacher Education Licensure Programs  are continuously updated to reflect new licensure requirements from the Minnesota Board of Teaching. Please contact your program advisor for the latest information about program requirements whether you are (1) applying to a teacher education program, or (2) currently enrolled in a teacher education program.
