Purpose

Graphic Design is a multi-disciplinary program based in the Art & Design Department. Coursework is also required in the Mass Communication, Marketing, Communication Studies, and Computer Science departments. Building on a foundation in design, drawing, studio arts, and art history, students work with Wacom tablets and professional design software, gaining experience in print and new media design. The capstone experience includes required participation in the Senior Design Exhibition and a graphic design internship with a regional business.

Note: Graphic Design students are required to use Apple laptop computers.

Admission to the Program

Students are encouraged to declare Graphic Design as their major upon entering WSU.

Application for formal admission, which takes place every semester, requires that students:

  1. Complete (or be currently enrolled in) ART 150 - Digital 2-D Design , ART 243 - Typography , and ART 118 - Drawing I .
  2. Demonstrate software competency. Intermediate level software skills in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign are required to take advanced level design courses. Students will be evaluated through their Design Program Application Portfolio. Additional software test is required if portfolio did not convey the required software skills.
  3. Complete an application form.
  4. Submit a portfolio of analog and digital work along with the application form. Because seats are limited, admission to the program is competitive based on preparation, portfolio, and academic record. Students who are not admitted may reapply.
