Computer science majors choose between two options: Computer Science (CS) and Applied Computer Science (ACS). Both options require a common core set of courses designed to give students a fundamental understanding of both theoretical and applied computer science, and an introduction to current topics and practices in the industry. Upper-level courses within each option build on these concepts to provide depth in particular areas. As such, all computer science majors are prepared for computer science careers and, if they desire, further graduate study in computer-related fields.

Applied Computer Science (30-31 S.H.)

Math (3-4 S.H.)

Choose one:

Choose One Emphasis Area (15-16 S.H.)

Note

* 1 S.H. counts in major; 7 S.H. count as GEP GOAL 3 requirements and not counted in major.

Computer Information Systems Emphasis (15 S.H.)

Note

* credits count as GEP GOAL 5 requirements and not counted in major.

Human Computer Interaction Emphasis (15 S.H.)

Note

* no more than 3 S.H. from Graphic Design electives
** 3 S.H. count as GEP GOAL 5 requirement and not counted in major

Electives (3 S.H.)

Choose from Computer Science Electives list below.

Note

* Only 3 S.H. may be applied to major or minor.

Graduate School Recommendations

  1. Students who intend to attend graduate school in computer science will need to complete the following:
  2. It is also recommended that students who intend to study in a bioinformatics graduate program take more biology and chemistry courses, such as △ BIOL 308 - Cell Biology , BIOL 430 - Molecular Biology , and CHEM 351 - Principles of Organic Chemistry II  as open electives.
