2.0 GPA required.

Letter grade required in all minor courses unless otherwise noted.

Overview

The Adapted Physical Education (APE) Teaching minor prepares Physical Education teacher candidates to design, implement, and evaluate physical education programs for PK-12 students with disabilities who have unique learning needs. Teacher candidates develop effective teaching competencies that result in attainment of objective and measurable outcomes for students with physical, intellectual, behavioral, sensory, and/or other developmental disabilities in a variety of physical activity settings. APE minor students participate in teaching experiences associated with program course work requirements including practicum experiences in PK-12 settings.

Admission to the minor is limited to Physical Education Teaching majors who are formally admitted to the College of Education. Students of other majors may take coursework in the minor with instructor approval. Physical Education majors who successfully complete the Adapted Physical Education minor are eligible to receive the Minnesota Developmental/Adapted Physical Education (DAPE) teaching endorsement (licensure code 190302). Completion of the minor coursework and practicum does not guarantee APE licensure by the Minnesota Board of Teaching. In order to receive DAPE endorsement, teacher candidates must (a) successfully pass all APE minor coursework with a grade of C or better; (b) pass the MTLE Special Education content examination; and (b) possess or be eligible for Physical Education licensure (licensure code 080300).

Admission Criteria: C grade or better in PESS 237 & admission to Physical Education Teaching major.

Course(s) Unique to Minor

WSU policy requires a minor contain at least one course unique to the minor and not used in major or additional requirements. See DARS for details.
