English - Teaching English as a Second Language K-12 (Teaching) (ESLT) - BT Major

Minor (or additional major if non-dual degree seeking) required.

2.75 GPA required.

Letter grade required in all major courses unless otherwise noted.

This is a licensure program that prepares students to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) at the K-12 level. Students receive a BS degree from the English Department by completing the ESLT major and the Professional Education sequence of courses in the Education Department. Students must be admitted to the Education Program before enrolling in Education courses.

Foreign Language


This major requires a minimum of two years of second/foreign language instruction in a high school setting or one year in a college setting or equivalent.

Electives (7 S.H.)


Extra departmental electives may be allowed with department chairperson approval.

Teacher Education Licensure Program Information


Students must be admitted to the Teacher Education Unit before taking Professional Education courses. This process is competitive; the number of students admitted each semester is limited. Admission is based on grades (2.75 GPA), passing Basic Skills Exams and other measures. All Winona State University Teacher Education Licensure Programs  are continuously updated to reflect new licensure requirements from the Minnesota Board of Teaching. Please contact your program advisor for the latest information about program requirements whether you are (1) applying to a teacher education program, or (2) currently enrolled in a teacher education program.

Professional Education Sequence (36 S.H.)


Note: Teacher education majors must complete all Professional Education Sequence courses in addition to content area courses. Refer to Teacher Education Licensure Programs  for more information.

Note


  • EDFD 401 and 461 must be taken concurrently
  • EDFD 421 and 441 must be taken concurrently
  • EDFD 459 and 462 must be taken concurrently

Dual Degrees


Students wishing to complete two degrees concurrently, (example: Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science) must complete a minimum of an additional 30 semester hours above the required 120-128 credit hours. Students must complete all major requirements under both degrees, including separate minors if required.
