Recreation, Tourism and Therapeutic Recreation (RTTR)
This major is designed to prepare students for professional leadership roles in a variety of public, commercial, clinical, community, and natural resource settings where recreational and/or therapeutic recreation services are offered. Within the major, students may select Track A, Recreation and Tourism (RT) and/or Track B, Therapeutic Recreation (TR). Students who graduate with the Therapeutic Recreation Track are qualified to sit for the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) examination. Admission to the Major
To be admitted to the Recreation, Tourism and Therapeutic Recreation (RTTR) program, a student must fulfill one of the following requirements:
- Be admitted to Winona State University as an entering freshman or transfer student.
- Have a minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA as a currently enrolled student. (Note: A 2.50 cumulative GPA is required prior to completion of internship registration processes.)
Denial of Admission
Students may be denied admission to the RTTR major for failure to meet any of the WSU or RTTR admissions requirements.
- To be eligible for an internship, a student must have a cumulative 2.50 GPA as it appears on the Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS) prior to completion of registering for his/her internship. Note: It is the student’s responsibility to complete a graduation application within the timeframe designated by the Records & Registration Services.
- If a student fails an internship due to poor performance or a serious ethical or legal violation, he or she may be dropped from the major or will be required to participate in a remediation plan. A TR or RT internship may be repeated only one time. If a student fails a second internship, he or she will not be able to graduate with a RTTR major.
- A student must earn a grade of “C” or better in all RTTR core and supportive courses with the exception of internships, which are pass/no credit courses. Supportive courses must be at the 200-level or higher.
- A student who has earned another bachelor’s degree or is currently pursuing another bachelor’s degree is not required to take Specialty Area or Supportive courses within the RT major (only). Note: If a student who is currently pursuing another bachelor’s degree decides that he/she no longer wishes to pursue the second degree, the student must take both the Supportive and Specialty Area courses.
- It is highly recommended that students enroll in either STAT 110 - Fundamentals of Statistics or STAT 210 - Statistics for the General Education math requirement.
Students identified by the RTTR faculty as needing assistance in academic, personal or professional domains are required to attend a review meeting initiated by the advisor and called by the Department Chairperson. An assistance plan will be developed; the plan will likely draw upon the services of such units as the Counseling Center, the Writing Center, Student Support Services, Tutoring Services, and Advising Services.
Warning and Suspension Policy
Students must be in good standing (as defined by WSU) at the end of each academic year to remain enrolled in the RTTR program. Students not in good standing will be notified of their status at their advisory session. Students must complete an assistance plan to remain in the program; otherwise, they are suspended from the program.
Students may apply for reinstatement to the program, one semester after receiving a notice of suspension.
Students who are suspended from the RTTR program may submit a written appeal for re-admission to the department chairperson.

Internship hours are variable and may be completed over two semesters. Students are advised to complete all RTTR course work prior to enrolling; no student will be allowed to enroll in an internship with more than two RTTR course requirements remaining.

Select 3 elective courses with advisor approval.
