Communication Studies - Applied Communication Major Map  

Overview

This option is designed to provide students with the most choices in their major in communication studies. Students can choose from the widest number of courses and customize the curriculum to meet their personal and professional goals. Students who major in Applied Communication will be expected to:

  1. Assess communication behavior
  2. Compare and contrast diverse perspectives on communication
  3. Analyze communicative issues in real-world scenarios
  4. Apply communication research findings both in and out of the classroom
  5. Conduct semi-independent research in Communication Studies

* For students who will graduate with a double-major and have met the Oral/Writing Intensive course requirement through another program, the CMST Intensive course requirement(s) may be waived provided that the student have an additional upper-level CMST course to reach the required 45 semester hours for the major.

Electives (15 credits)


  • Choose up to two 100/200-level courses, excluding CMST 191  or CMST 192 .
  • Choose at least three 300/400-level courses not fulfilling core requirements, oral or written intensives. Students will earn 24 credits of upper-level coursework if three upper-level elective courses are taken. Students will earn 27 credits of upper-level coursework if four upper-level elective courses are taken.
  • Courses not used for intensive requirements may be used to meet elective requirements.
  • Only three credits of CMST 399  can be used toward this requirement.
  • CMST 291 , CMST 292 , &  CMST 451  may be repeated for credit with different topics.

Dual Degrees


Students wishing to complete two degrees concurrently, (example: Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science) must complete a minimum of an additional 30 credits above the required 120-128 credit hours. Students must complete all major requirements under both degrees, including separate minors if required.
