Mathematics (MATH) - BS Major

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Degrees & Programs

66-69 credits

Supplemental courses or minor (or additional major if non-dual degree seeking) required.

2.0 GPA required.

C grade or better required in all major courses numbered 395 and below unless otherwise noted.

The Mathematics major provides students with an extended investigation of the techniques, applications, and theories of mathematics. The Mathematics Core requirements expose students to a diverse range of mathematical topics and provide in-depth, rigorous study in selected areas. Students choose from electives which further broaden their understanding of mathematics. Students also complete a series of courses, including an independent project, that supplements their mathematical knowledge or complete another major or minor. The Mathematics major can prepare students for graduate school in mathematics or for employment in industry and government.

Note: Credit will only be given once for DSCI 395 , MATH 395 , and STAT 395 . If MATH 395 is used to fulfill the Professional Skills requirement in the Supplementary Mathematics option below, then DSCI 395, MATH 395, and STAT 395 cannot be used to fulfill the Elective requirements.

Electives (9 credits)

Students must take at least 6 credits from the first list and another 3 credits from either list.

Supplementary Mathematics (18-19 credits) or a minor

Students engage in a variety of courses and an independent project that incorporate mathematics. Alternatively, students may elect to complete a minor or another major of their choice in addition to the Mathematics Core and Electives above.

Programming Elective (3-4 credits)

Professional Skills & Independent Project (6 credits)

An independent project addresses a topic that is significantly beyond the standard undergraduate curriculum and will result in a product that is disseminated both orally and in written form.

Note

* This course is only offered by arrangement. Students should coordinate with their academic advisor during their sophomore year to complete this requirement. Students are required to complete a total of 3 credits of MATH 490 - Independent Problems in Mathematics , possibly taken over the course of several semesters. Students completing an independent project in a summer research program or an internship in mathematics or in another technical discipline may, in close consultation with their academic advisors, choose to substitute an additional suitable MATH elective course for this requirement.

Dual Degrees

Students wishing to complete two degrees concurrently, (example: Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science) must complete a minimum of an additional 30 credits above the required 120-128 credit hours. Students must complete all major requirements under both degrees, including separate minors if required.
