Overview

Japanese Studies (JAPN Minor) offers a solid foundation to understand the Japanese language, culture, and society, and prepares students to work within the diverse, global economy. Proficiency-oriented language courses, combined with electives, help students develop communication, cultural competency, and globally marketable skills. The JAPN Minor enhances students’ marketability in fields including communications, education, engineering, international business and banking, science and technology, translation, and more. Knowledge of Japanese will also facilitate the teaching of English as a Foreign/Second Language.

WSU offers a wide range of study abroad opportunities with partner universities in Japan. Students are strongly encouraged to study abroad in Japan for a year or a semester as part of the minor.

Specialized Study in Japanese (9 credits)

Choose 9 credits:

Note

* GS 315 - Special Topics in Japanese Studies  may be taken for up to 12 credits - 9 credits applied toward Section II (Specialized Study) and 3 credits applied to Section III (Electives).

Study Abroad

Sections II and III requirements may also be met by taking approved courses abroad. Courses taken abroad will transfer to WSU as substitutes for GS 315 - Special Topics in Japanese Studies .

Students studying abroad may elect to apply up to twelve (12) credits toward their minor. No more than six (6) credits may be taken for credit toward the minor from the same discipline area, e.g., Linguistics, Business, Japanese Culture, Japanese History and Politics.

Information on available courses may be obtained through the official websites of WSU partner institutions. Students are urged to meet with the Japanese Language instructor prior to departure.

Course(s) Unique to Minor

WSU policy requires a minor contain at least one course unique to the minor and not used in major or additional requirements. See Degree Audit for details.
