Minor (or additional major if non-dual degree seeking) required in another discipline or language.

2.5 GPA required.

Letter grade required in all major courses unless otherwise noted.

  • Being bilingual improves cognitive functions like being able to ignore distractions and hold information in memory.
  • Employers are seeking applicants who can speak Spanish in nearly every profession (medical, government, legal, journalism, finance, education, sales, etc.).
  • More than 300 million people speak Spanish worldwide, making it one of the largest markets for businesses and one of the most useful languages in the world for travel.
  • Spanish is the official language in 21 countries and an official language in the European Union, UNESCO, GATT and many other international organizations.

Note


If a student gets retroactive credit for SPAN 201 - Intermediate Spanish I  and/or SPAN 202 - Intermediate Spanish II  (with a Pass grade), the course(s) will count towards the major.

Intercultural Immersion Experience


15 hours minimum required as approved by advisor - fulfillable by any of the following options:

  • Study Abroad
  • Faculty-led Travel Study
  • 15-hour minimum Clinical/Internship/Field Experiences in university coursework
  • Partnership with local or regional organization

** GS 468  must be taken concurrently with SPAN 410  to count as electives. GS 468 taken by itself will not count.

GS 350 - Cross-Cultural Field Experience  may count as elective credit if taken in a Spanish-speaking region and pending advisor approval. Up to 9 credits of electives may be awarded. Up to 4 of the 9 credits may be counted towards the major if the coursework is in English. See Spanish program advisor to complete a course substitution form.

Dual Degrees


Students wishing to complete two degrees concurrently, (example: Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science) must complete a minimum of an additional 30 credits above the required 120-128 credit hours. Students must complete all major requirements under both degrees, including separate minors if required.
