2.0 GPA required.

Letter grade required in all minor courses unless otherwise noted.

Must be accompanied with a Teacher Education Licensure major - admission required.

Overview

The Bilingual/Bicultural Education Minor program prepares future K-12 teachers to teach academic content (math, science, language arts, etc.) in two languages, such as English and Spanish. The program offers 30 hours of clinical teaching in a bilingual classroom with guidance from a bilingual teacher and the program advisor.

WSU students with these majors can qualify for a Bilingual/Bicultural Education endorsement on their Minnesota teaching licenses:

  • Elementary Education (K-6)
  • Math Education (5-12 or 7-12)
  • Science Education (5-12 or 7-12)
  • Social Studies Education (5-12 or 7-12)
  • School Health Education (5-12 or 7-12)

Bilingual/Bicultural Education students must demonstrate at least Advanced Low spoken and written proficiency in English and the language of their prospective K-12 students (e.g., Spanish) in order to qualify for the Bilingual/Bicultural Education endorsement from the State of Minnesota. Demonstration of language proficiency in a language other than English is accomplished by successfully passing the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview and ACTFL Written Proficiency Test at the Advanced Low or higher level.

Students who do not reach Advanced Low may still earn the Bilingual/Bicultural Education minor, but they will not qualify for the endorsement on the Minnesota teaching license.
