Mass Communication - Strategic Communication 3+2 Major Map

Overview

Students wishing to pursue an undergraduate degree in Mass Communication and a graduate degree in Strategic Communication should choose this major. This five-year accelerated program is designed to provide students an opportunity to complete both academic degrees in less time than traditional programs. The Mass Communication major is divided into an academic core based on common principles of Mass Communication inquiry and three field-specific options. This major prepares students to create, produce, deliver, and understand the effects of mediated messages across all of the field-specific options - advertising, creative digital media, and public relations.

Students seeking to enter this major with the intent to pursue the MA degree (3+2 program), are expected to have a 3.0 GPA and meet all admissions requirements for the MA in Strategic Communication including the graduate school application.

3+2

This comprehensive mass communication program is aimed at undergraduate students looking to pursue both a mass communication undergraduate degree and a strategic communication graduate degree in five years. Upon successful acceptance into the Master of Arts in Strategic Communication (2nd semester of 3rd year) and the completion of the 4th year, students will be conferred an undergraduate Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Mass Communication. At the completion of the graduate program, students will be awarded an MA degree in Strategic Communication. Thus, successful students would receive both an undergraduate and graduate degree in a five-year period.

The 3+2 program is intended for students entering WSU as first-year students or students who transfer/change majors early in their undergraduate education. Students who change majors or transfer to WSU are not guaranteed admission into the MA program, as official acceptance is part of a competitive process. Students should be aware that it may take additional time to complete all undergraduate and graduate requirements and students are responsible for following the 3+2 program map.

Declaration of this major in the first-year at WSU is important to allow proper advising in this accelerated program. Students are recommended to speak with the Director of the Strategic Communication Graduate Program or the Chair of the Mass Communication Department during their first semester at WSU to answer questions and develop an academic plan.
