CMST 494 - Teaching and Coaching Oral Communication (Grades 5-8)


(2 credits)

Prospective teachers work with national and state standards for the teaching of communication arts in grades 5-8. Lesson plans in the areas of listening and interpersonal communication are written, taught, and assessed by peers and self. A unit plan in public speaking for the 8th grade level is created. Discussions about coaching extracurricular activities in the communication arts are focused at the level of the beginning, or assistant, coach. Prerequisites: CMST 191 - Introduction to Public Speaking  or CMST 192 - Introduction to Speech Communication , EDFD 400 - Human Development and Learning: Early Childhood and Elementary , and instructor permission. Grade only. Offered annually (usually spring semester).
