MSW 646 - Trauma-Informed Clinical Practice with Children and Families (3 credits)
This course is intended to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and affective abilities to effectively and compassionately treat children who have experienced trauma and their family system. We begin by examining the psychic harm trauma has on children and adolescents, differential trauma symptomology, and parenting considerations. The course then explores the complexity of mental illness, legal involvement, substance use, and internet-based harm on the child(ren), members of their family, and the system as a whole. Students will gain knowledge of the application of evidence-informed practice strategies, grounded in the therapeutic relationship and focused on healing all elements of the family system. Prerequisite: MSW 640 - Trauma-Informed Clinical Social Work Practice or instructor permission. Grade only. Offered each semester.
