ETHN 300 - Latinx Communities of the Midwest

(3 credits) Meets GOAL 10.

As some of the fastest growing communities in the Midwest, the class explores Latinx communities’ relationship with the socio-historical, cultural, and environmental landscape of America’s heartland. The course will, first, delve into the social and cultural background of Latinx communities residing in the Midwest since the 19th century and then, explore similar dynamics of more recently established Latinx communities. Second, the class will explore the resilience of Latinx communities in the Midwest and how they have interacted with Midwestern cultural and natural landscapes, especially in the midst of systemic racism, political challenges, and the climate crisis. Third, throughout the class, Latinx social, educational, and environmental activism will be highlighted to demonstrate the continued agency these communities exert to create a sense of place and belonging in this region of the United States. Prerequisite: ENG 111 - College Reading and Writing  or ETHN 230 - Introduction to Latinx Studies  or instructor permission. Grade only. Offered alternate semesters.
