PESS 309 - Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Adventure Sports and Coaching

(3 credits)

This course focuses on participant diversity, equity and inclusive practices; and how differences based on religion, physical ability, socioeconomic class, sex, gender, sexual orientation and racial hierarchies impacts historical and current sport experiences and outcomes. Diversity, equity and inclusion issues in adventure sports and coaching will be related to multicultural dynamics in the larger society. Students will examine the social processes and institutions which influence adventure sports programming & coaching. Students will examine their own cultural biases, values, beliefs and behaviors and understand their influence on individuals from different multicultural groups. Prerequisites: PESS 114 - Fundamentals of Adventure Education and ✽ PESS 161 - Fundamentals of Outdoor Activities. Grade only. Offered annually (usually spring semester). Note: Course limited to 30 students.
