Purpose

The War, Peace, and Terrorism minor is an interdisciplinary program administered by the Philosophy Department; the program includes courses offered by various departments and faculty, including Global Studies, History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology.

“War is hell.” - William Tecumseh Sherman
“War is only a cowardly escape from the problems of peace.” - Thomas Mann
“For it isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.” - Eleanor Roosevelt

As outbreaks of violence around the world continually remind us, war, terrorism, and the elusiveness of peace are among the deepest problems facing humankind throughout history. The War, Peace, and Terrorism minor provides students with an opportunity to study the nature, implications, and ethical foundations of war, pacifism, and terrorism. Drawing on expertise from various departments, this minor explores the issues surrounding armed conflict from many different perspectives including historical, legal, moral, political, philosophical, social, cultural, religious, and psychological.
