Spanish (Teaching) (SPNT) - BT Major

72-76 S.H (no minor required)

2.75 GPA required.

Additionally, the Minnesota Board of Teaching requires that all Spanish Teaching candidates achieve an oral proficiency level of Intermediate High on the ACTFL proficiency scale. In order to achieve this level, most students need to study in a Spanish-speaking country for a minimum of one semester. Any Spanish Teaching student who has not achieved the Intermediate High level will not be allowed to student teach and will not be certified to teach by the state of Minnesota.

Teacher Education Licensure Program Information

Before a student is able to take Education courses needed for licensure, that student must first be admitted to the Teacher Education Unit. This process is competitive as the number of students who can be admitted each semester is limited. Admission is based on grades, passing the Basic Skills Exams and other measures. For more information on this Admission process, visit the Teacher Education Program Admissions page.

All Winona State University Teacher Education Licensure Programs  are continuously updated to reflect new licensure requirements from the Minnesota Board of Teaching. Please contact your program advisor for the latest information about program requirements whether you are (1) applying to a teacher education program, or (2) currently enrolled in a teacher education program.

Note:

If a student takes SPAN 202 - Intermediate Spanish II  and gets retroactive credit for SPAN 201 - Intermediate Spanish I  (with a Pass grade), then SPAN 201 will count towards the major.

Note:

* In a Spanish-speaking region and pending advisor’s approval. Up to 9 S.H. may be awarded for completion of course requirements in Spanish. Course work completed in English will not count towards the Spanish Teaching major.

** If not applied as a core course

Language Proficiency Interview

All Spanish Teaching students must complete an official Oral Proficiency Interview through Language Testing International prior to student teaching. Students who do not obtain Intermediate High or higher will not be allowed to student teach. See program advisor for details.

Please Note:

Students interested in the Spanish Teaching major must select the PSPN code for declaration purposes. This will be converted into SPNT (Spanish Teaching) major after they have been admitted into the program.
