Health/Healthcare Leadership (HHL) - MS

Department Overview: The Health/Healthcare Leadership (HHL) Master’s Degree is part of the Healthcare Leadership and Administration (HLA) program. The programs provide adult students with authentic, fresh, and easily utilized leadership concepts. The programs are multidisciplinary online programs for working adults in allied health and healthcare organizations. 

HHL Master’s Degree: The HHL Graduate Degree provides advanced communication and leadership knowledge. The program focuses on easily understandable applied analytics and risk management knowledge necessary to thrive in today’s future-focused health/healthcare market. Explore how big data and analytics are reframing health, healthcare, leadership, and management. Students will learn to find, understand, and present big data as they ethically lead their health group or healthcare organization using HHL solution-focused knowledge. 

Purpose of Graduate Degree: The increasing availability of electronic health data creates an incredible opportunity to apply large-scale, clinical analytics to predict tends and use data to improve personal health, healthcare, manage risks, attend to ethical use of data, and improve patient outcomes. WSU’s Graduate HHL Degree will provide health/healthcare leaders and managers with foundational communication and leadership skills, as well as the ability to understanding big data and analytics used to drive change and solution-based decision making.

Accreditation: Winona State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and offers quality undergraduate, graduate, and online education programs. The Health/Healthcare Leadership Master’s Degree program’s learning outcomes are aligned with the Commission on Accreditation of Health Management Education (CAHME) - Quality and Safety focus.

Program Admission Requirements


  • Undergraduate degree in Healthcare Leadership or related area or current HLA (undergrad to grad) student in good standing.
  • Cumulative undergrad GPA of 2.75 or better. Major GPA will also be considered.
  • Upper-division (300/400-level) statistics course with C grade of or better.  
  • Professional work experience in health, allied health, or healthcare related field.

Program Entry Options


UG + Grad Program: Students will enroll in the HLA undergraduate (UG) online completion program with the intention to graduate with the HHL Master’s Degree.

  • WSU Healthcare Leadership (HLL) UG majors are eligible to take 9 credits in identified graduate courses that will complete the UG degree and accelerate the master’s program completion. HLL UG majors within WSU’s HLA BAS Completion program will take 9 credits less in the 35 credit HHL Master’s program. UG HLL majors will take the graduate version of the 9 credits. Other UG majors see program director for details specific to your WSU UG program.

HHL Master’s Program: Students may complete the HHL Master’s Degree in 4 or 5 semesters. Students with a four-year undergraduate (UG) degree in a related field along with health, allied health or healthcare professional experience are eligible.  

  • No more than 9 transfer credits may be considered on an individual basis to determine if the course(s) meet program objectives and learning outcomes.  
  • Credit for Prior Learning may also be an option for no more than 9 credits.

GPA & Prerequisites


Students with a 2.75 cumulative GPA in a related field of study from an accredited university along with health or healthcare related professional experience are eligible for program admission. Students must have completed a semester course with a B grade or better in statistics.

Students must apply to the School of Graduate Studies and complete the HHL Program survey. Eligible students will interview with program faculty. Details available on the HHL website.
