Healthcare Leadership (MHL) - MS

Department Overview: The Healthcare Leadership (MHL) Master’s degree is part of the Health Leadership and Administration (HLA) program. These multidisciplinary programs designed for adult learners are flexible, online, and provide evidenced-based leadership knowledge and skills for the health and healthcare sectors.

MHL Master’s Degree: The MHL graduate degree has a mission to develop health and healthcare leaders who can analyze, utilize, and present data to ethically manage people and make decisions, mitigate risk, and drive continuous improvement at the organizational level.

Purpose of Graduate Degree: The increasing availability of electronic health data creates an incredible opportunity to apply large-scale, clinical analytics to predict tends and use data to improve personal health, healthcare, manage risks, attend to ethical use of data, and improve patient outcomes. WSU’s Graduate MHL Degree will provide healthcare leaders and managers with foundational communication and leadership skills, as well as the ability to understanding big data and analytics used to drive change and solution-based decision making.

Program Admission Requirements


  • Undergraduate degree in Healthcare Leadership or related area or current HLA (undergrad to grad) student in good standing.
  • Cumulative undergrad GPA of 2.75 or better. Major GPA will also be considered.
  • Professional work experience in health, allied health, or healthcare related field.

Program Entry Options


UG + Grad Program: Students will enroll in the HLA undergraduate (UG) online completion program with the intention to graduate with the MHL Master’s Degree.

  • WSU Healthcare Leadership & Administration (HLA) BAS majors are eligible to take 9 credits in identified graduate courses that will complete the UG degree and accelerate the master’s program completion. HLA UG majors within WSU’s HLA BAS Completion program will take 9 credits less in the 34 credit MHL Master’s program. UG HLA majors will take the graduate version of the 9 credits under the PMHL (Healthcare Leadership) program. Other UG majors see program director for details specific to your WSU UG program.

MHL Master’s Program: Students may complete the MHL Master’s Degree in 4 or 5 semesters. Students with a four-year undergraduate (UG) degree in a related field along with health, allied health or healthcare professional experience are eligible.  

  • No more than 9 transfer credits may be considered on an individual basis to determine if the course(s) meet program objectives and learning outcomes.  
  • Credit for Prior Learning may also be an option for no more than 9 credits.

GPA & Prerequisites


Students with a 2.75 cumulative GPA in a related field of study from an accredited university along with health or healthcare related professional experience are eligible for program admission. Students must have completed a semester course with a C grade or better in statistics.

Students must apply to the School of Graduate Studies and complete the MHL Program survey. Eligible students will interview with program faculty. Details available on the MHL website.
