21 credits

3.0 GPA required.

A Plan of Study is available on the Graduate Certificate in Nursing website.

This certificate program is designed to integrate Post-Nursing Graduate degree students into the existing sequence of courses leading to preparation as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP). This option provides nurses that already have graduate degree preparation in another area of nursing the opportunity to acquire the education, skills, and abilities to seek certification and practice as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Some of the courses are offered using distance teaching strategies. GC graduates are prepared for eligibility for the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Acute Care NP exam or the American Academy of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) exam.

*Clinical hours may be tailored based on prior experiences.

Admission Prerequisite

Applicants must have graduated from a nationally accredited graduate nursing program and hold at least a master’s degree in nursing. Evidence of prior completion of the following advanced courses is required: Advanced Pathophysiology, Advanced Health Assessment (including diagnostic reasoning), Advanced Health Promotion, and Advanced Pharmacology (must be completed within the last three years in some states for credentialing). If these courses have not been completed, students must enroll in and successfully complete them prior to beginning specialty role courses. Upon admission, students are required to submit syllabi for each course for faculty review. If gaps in required content are identified, students will be required to complete only the courses (identified below) necessary to address those gaps prior to beginning specialty role courses.

The Graduate Programs in Nursing offer five Graduate Certificate programs for nurses interested in post-nursing graduate education: Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner ; Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist ; Family Nurse Practitioner Nurse Educator ; or Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner .
