NURS 648 - Ostomy Care


(3 credits)

Learners will focus on anatomical, physiological, and disease states that result in ostomy surgical procedures. Course content includes the physical and psychological WOC care of the pre-and post-operative ostomy patient needs. Students will learn stoma marking principles, ostomy construction, and management fundamentals. Learners will explore contemporary patient and staff ostomy educational needs. This offering also covers patient factors impacting the selection of appropriate ostomy pouching systems and accessories. The course also includes the management of peristomal skin conditions, stoma complications, fistula management and care of percutaneous tubes.  NURS 628 - Professional Practice in Wound, Ostomy, Continence (WOC) Nursing  or instructor permission. Grade only. Offered annually (usually fall semester).
