Sociology (SOCG) - Minor

Students are encouraged to meet frequently with their advisor to design the most effective program for their future career and educational plans. Students may not major and minor in Sociology - General Option. Students may not count more than 9 credits from a Sociology major towards a Sociology minor.

Overview


The Sociology minor is valuable for those considering careers in advertising, advocacy, climate change, counseling, criminal justice, data analytics, human resources, management, non-profit administration, public administration, public policy, research, and social work. Sociology students examine how culture, personal experiences, and social structure affect human behavior and beliefs. Students explore theory, examine published research, and develop their understanding of social inequality, diversity, social change, and the different life courses individuals might take.

Note: Students may not major in Sociology (SOC) and minor in Sociology (SOCG).

Career Suggestions


Students interested in a career working with families should consider taking: SOC 212 - Sociology of Families  (for their sociology foundation course), SOC 408 - Advanced Topics in Family Sociology ,   SOC 412 - Sociology of Gender and Sexuality , and/or SOC 431 - Social Class and Power .

Students interested in a career in human service organizations should consider taking: SOC 333 - Sociology of Health and Illness SOC 334 - Sociology of Education , SOC 412 - Sociology of Gender and Sexuality  SOC 423 - Sociology of Race and Ethnicity , SOC 431 - Social Class and Power , and/or SOC 432 - Poverty and Policy .
